"Man
is by nature a political
animal." Aristotle
And Facebook is willing to sell your soul to the devil (or at least
politicians) Ubiquitous surveillance? Another invasion of your
privacy by Facebook? How should I categorize this? I hope the offer
the same service to the Comedy Cable Channel...
Facebook has cut a deal with political
website Politico that allows
the independent site machine-access to Facebook users' messages, both
public and private, when a Republican Presidential
candidate is mentioned by name. The data is being collected and
analyzed for sentiment by Facebook's
data team, then delivered to Politico to serve as the basis of
data-driven
political analysis and journalism.
The move is being widely
condemned in the press as a violation of privacy but if Facebook
would do this right, it could be a huge win for everyone. Facebook
could be the biggest, most dynamic census of human opinion and
interaction in history. Unfortunately, failure to talk prominently
about privacy protections, failure to make this opt-in (or even opt
out!) and the inclusion of private messages are all things that put
at risk any remaining shreds of trust in Facebook that could have
served as the foundation of a new era of social self-awareness.
This would also apply to “social
media” (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) used for business, wouldn't it?
E-mail
after work hours? That's overtime, says law
… According
to the Associated Press, this law says that if a company e-mails
you after your allotted working hours, then this is the same as if
one's supervisor is giving one an instruction to perform a certain
work task.
Perhaps my idea for an anti-social
network has merit!
"Author Susan Cain argues that
modern
society's focus on charisma and group brainstorming has harmed
creativity and productivity by removing the quiet, creative
process. 'Research strongly suggests that people are more creative
when they enjoy privacy and freedom from interruption. And the most
spectacularly creative people in many fields are often introverted,
according to studies by the psychologists Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and
Gregory Feist. They're extroverted enough to exchange and advance
ideas, but see themselves as independent and individualistic.
They're not joiners by nature.'"
I read this as “Politicians are
thinking about laws to counter the technology Pirate Bay used
generations ago.”
An anonymous reader tips news that The
Pirate Bay is making a move away from .torrent files in favor of
'magnet links.'
On Thursday the site made
magnet links the default, and TorrentFreak reports that they'll
stop serving .torrent files altogether in about a month.
"The
announcement is bound to lead to confusion and uncertainty among many
torrent users, but in reality very little will change for the average
Pirate Bay visitor. Users will still be able to download files, but
these will now be started through a magnet link instead of a .torrent
file. The Pirate Bay team told TorrentFreak that one of the
advantages of the transition to a 'magnet site' is that it requires
relatively little bandwidth to host a proxy. This
is topical, since this week courts in both Finland and the
Netherlands ordered local Internet providers to block the torrent
site. Perhaps even better, without
the torrent files everyone can soon host a full copy of The Pirate
Bay on a USB thumb drive, which may come in handy
in the future."
