These databases were created to share with “appropriate” people and agencies. Failure to share the data is a major weakness in intelligence, even at the level of local police. Inappropriate sharing is the flip side of that coin.

500,000 EU computers can access private British data

February 6, 2010 by Dissent

Jamie Doward reports:

Privacy campaigners expressed shock last night after it emerged that large amounts of confidential personal information held about British citizens on a giant computer network spanning the European Union could be accessed by more than 500,000 terminals.

The figure was revealed in a Council of the European Union document examining proposals to establish a new agency, based in France, that would manage much of the 27 EU member states’ shared data. But the sheer number of access points to the Schengen Information System (SIS) – which holds information regarding immigration status, arrest warrants, entries on the police national computer and a multitude of personal details – has triggered concerns about the security of the data.

Read more in the Guardian.

[From the article:

"It is well known that the greater the points of access, the greater the number of people who have access and the greater the chance that data will be misplaced, lost or illegally accessed," said Tony Bunyan, director of Statewatch. "The idea that mass databases can be totally secure and that privacy can be guaranteed is a fallacy."

Is this a proper response to privacy concerns? Why not: “Let's work out a method that doesn't compromise privacy?” If we start withholding data wouldn't that be their response too? (Have we ever demonstrated how useful this data is?)

EU Committee Says No To Bank Data Sharing

krupert writes to let us know that the civil liberties committee of the European Parliament has voted to revoke the data-sharing arrangement by which US intelligence agencies have access to EU banking data via the SWIFT system. The US has threatened to withhold cooperation on terrorist intelligence if the bank data deal now in place is canceled, which it will be next week if the full European Parliament votes in line with the committee's recommendation. US intelligence agencies clandestinely tapped the SWIFT interbank clearing data from just after 9/11 until 2006, when the secret arrangement was made public. After that, Belgium-based SWIFT pulled their servers from the US and set up shop in Bruss

15 Fantastic Finds on the Google Code Repository

February 6th, 2010 by Andy Walpole

Google Code Repository is a section of Google that, just like SourceForge, allows developers to upload their code for others to use under license. The repository was launched in 2006 and after searching through its archives, I found a number of interesting scripts and other goodies that would be an asset in any website owner/website builder’s arsenal.

All the code examples below are free to download and use. They’re released under a GPL, BSD, MIT or Creative Commons license.
