Is this the proper response? At minimum, it will be very interesting to watch! Can the Credit Card Industry fine Heartland when they certified Heartland was in compliance with their “standards?”

Pointer: Heartland CEO Vows To Fight MasterCard Breach Fines Of $6 Million-Plus

May 11, 2009 by admin Filed under: Financial Sector, Hack, Malware, U.S.

Fred J. Aun of StorefrontBacktalk writes:

Heartland Payment Systems has apparently decided that being a data breach victim doesn’t mean that it has to be victimized by the card brands. At least that’s the impression from how Heartland CEO Robert Carr is reacting to more than $6 million in fines imposed on it by MasterCard, fines that that he said were illegal and that he plans to “vigorously contest” the fines.

Inside a data leak audit

Monday, May 11 2009 @ 05:49 AM EDT Contributed by: PrivacyNews

When the director of IT at a Boston-based, midsize pharmaceutical firm was first approached to participate in a data leakage audit, he was thrilled. He figured the audit would uncover a few weak spots in the company's data leak defenses and he would then be able to leverage the audit results into funding for additional security resources.

Source - Computerworld

[From the article:

… But he got way more than he bargained for. The 15-day audit identified 11,000 potential leaks, and revealed gaping holes in the IT team's security practices. (Read a related story on the most common violations encountered.)

Yooouuutuuube Puts YouTube on LSD

May 10th, 2009 | by Pete Cashmore

There are some pretty cool add-ons and tools for YouTube: in fact we wrote about more than 100 of them in our YouTube Toolbox. Some are fun, some useful and some - like the tools to download YouTube videos - aren’t necessarily legal.

But the YouTube tool that’s got people buzzing this week is just plain out of this world. Yooouuutuuube.com lets you put tens, even hundreds, of YouTube videos into rows and columns, creating an utterly trippy experience. Just enter a YouTube video ID and frame width for each “piece” of the mosaic, and Yooouuutuuube will generate a video grid.

The best example: view this 36 by 36 column Alice in Wonderland masterpiece…and be warned that either your computer, mind, or both may be pushed to the max.

Another interesting TED talk.

Open Source Textbooks For California

Posted by kdawson on Sunday May 10, @03:36PM from the byzantine-doesn't-begin-to-describe dept.

T-1000, appropriately enough, lets us know about a California initiative to compile open source science and math textbooks for the state, in the hopes of saving money. The effort is spearheaded by Gov. Schwarzenegger.

"The effort seems very promising, but the state's complex standards and arduous textbook evaluation process will pose major challenges. ... The governator will surely be able to stop the digital textbooks from gaining sentience and subjugating humanity, but there are trickier challenges that will be even tougher to defeat than the impending Skynet apocalypse. Textbooks are a surprisingly controversial issue in California and there is a lot of political baggage and bureaucratic red tape that will make an open source textbook plan especially troublesome. ... [T]he traditional wiki approach is untenable for California teaching material. Individual changes to textbooks can become a source of fierce debate and there are a multitude of special interest groups battling over what the textbooks should say and how they should say it. It would take the concept of Wikipedia edit wars to a whole new level."

Interesting in that it suggests a few holes (business opportunities?) in the credit market.

2009 Credit Card Survey of Small Business

News release: "The National Small Business Association (NSBA) today released data showing that reliance on credit cards is growing among small businesses. Unfortunately, so, too, is the number of small-business respondents who reported worsening credit-card terms. The NSBA 2009 Small Business Credit Card Survey provides a detailed view of how small businesses are utilizing their credit cards, how their credit-card companies are treating them, and the impacts of deteriorating credit-card terms on their business."
