Osama is a Phillies Phan? Think of this as an attack on the infrastructure of America. Imagine an attack that kept us from being entertained! (Oh, the horror...)

McDonald's Launches Free Wi-Fi in UK Restaurants

October 6, 2007

McDonalds plans to offer free Wi-Fi to customers in the UK.

LONDON (Reuters)—Fast food chain McDonald's said on Saturday it would offer free wireless Internet access across its 1,200-strong restaurants in the UK, making it the country's biggest provider of free wireless broadband access.

The move reflects increasing competition in the UK's broadband market dominated by contract or pay-as-you-go services, where a regular hotspot user usually has to pay around 5 pounds ($10.18) for an hour log-on. [So free is really worth something! Bob]

... McDonald's service will account for about 10 percent of the total Wi-Fi hotspots.

Designing Software With Privacy in Mind

Posted by Zonk on Sunday October 07, @06:02AM from the should-be-high-on-the-list dept. Privacy Programming IT

dalektcalum writes "Dr. Ann Cavoukian, Canada's Information and Privacy Commissioner, recently gave a talk entitled Privacy by Design. The talk starts off by covering the basics of privacy, and privacy law, and then moves onto the important component: how to design software that properly protects users privacy. The majority of the talk is spent on design principles, but also examines specific technologies (such as Elliptical Curve Cryptography)."

The site includes a flash video of the talk, but there are also several torrents for folks who want to avoid hammering their servers.

Novell to SCO - Pay Up

Posted by Zonk on Saturday October 06, @07:43PM from the they-want-money-that's-what-they-want dept. gosherm writes with word that, now that the dust is beginning to settle on the long-running SCO case, Novell wants to get paid. Now. They're requesting that the customary stay on SCO's finances (as a result of their bankruptcy) be lifted so that Novell can begin recouping some of its losses from the protracted legal battle. "'We need to adjudicate if this is money owed to Novell or if it is Novell's property,' said Bruce Lowry, spokesman for Novell. That could determine how quickly Novell can recover those funds. And time is of the essence since there's a possibility SCO 'may run low or even completely out of cash during the process of trying to reorganize,' Novell said in court documents filed Thursday. Novell is also trying to protect royalties SCO collects from Unix and Unixware software licensees and remits annually to the software developer. SCO is required to continue to remit between $500,000 and $800,000 annually to Novell -- the next payment is due Nov. 14. SCO remitted $696,413 to Novell between the third quarter of 2006 and the second quarter of this year."

I imagine this happens frequently. After all, once you have a good cite, why keep looking at it?

RIAA Conceals Overturned Case

Posted by Zonk on Saturday October 06, @06:43PM from the shoe-is-on-the-other-foot dept. The Courts Businesses Music

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes "When a Judge agreed with the RIAA's claim that 'making available' was actionable under the Copyright Act, in Atlantic v. Howell, the RIAA was quick to bring this 'authority' to the attention of the judges in Elektra v. Barker and Warner v. Cassin. Those judges were considering the same issue. When the that decision was overturned successfully, however, they were not so quick to inform those same judges of this new development. When the defendants' lawyers found out — a week after the RIAA's lawyers learned of it — they had to notify the judges themselves . At this moment we can only speculate as to what legal authorities they cited to the judge in Duluth, Minnesota, to get him to instruct the jurors that just 'making available' was good enough."
